My name is Emmanuel, but when you are here, you can call me Manno.
I created this website to share fables and stories with you all and give you the opportunity to get a piece of our culture. This way, anywhere you go, you can carry a piece of the culture with you.
I moved to the US at a young age, and back then, I thought I was fully immersed in my culture. When compared to other kids in the diaspora, like those who migrated at a younger age, those born in the states who spoke a little Kreyol, those who only understood the language and those who had no understanding at all; I felt proud to be the “most” Haitian out of the groups. By spending time with our elders, I realized I had a long way to go before I could consider myself a “true” Haitian.
This only dawned on me with time and maturity. The realization made me understand that my pride and sense of superiority regarding my peers was unfounded and only served to alienate those who would like to be part of the culture but couldn’t for lack of exposure.
For this reason, I came to you and present this platform. Now we can share stories from time to time and share a little bit of our culture. With this I only have two things to say:
1- I apologize on behalf of all of us who made you feel like a stranger in your culture.
2- And once more: Welcome, you are home.
